Annual Fundraiser: Barn Dance

Friends of Buena Library annually holds a festive barn dance to generate support for library operations or, beginning in 2010, to further the Capital Campaign. The popular evening event, featuring dinner, dancing, and fundraising activities, has enjoyed venues in the past at Buena Grange and the Toppenish Liberty Theatre.

The regal Liberty Theatre in Toppenish, built in 1915, and beautifully renovated by Oscar Martinez, provided a unique setting for the Grand Ole Barn Dance on May 22, 2010.

Arriving guests were greeted at the theatre entrance, amid the town’s reknown murals, by a posse of western welcomers. Inside, spotlighted historic gilt work and murals, cowboy boot bouquet-topped tables, wine and hors d'oeuves, set a festive tone. Vintners David and Linda Lowe provided Wineglass Cellars selections at the OK Corral wine bar. Full Throttle played contemporary music from the stage overlooking the dance floor and dining areas.

Master of Ceremonies YVFWC CEO Carlos Olivares’ enthusiasm energized the crowd throughout the evening. As Co-Chairman of the Friends of Buena Library’s Capital Campaign, his optimistic leadership captured audience attention. Together with State Senator Jim Honeyford and State Representative Bruce Chandler, he identified raffle winners of forty regional wines contributed by Agate Field Winery, Bonair Winery, Eaton Hill Winery, Claar Cellars, Knight Hill Winery, Masset Winery, Paradisos del Sol Winery, Portteus Winery, Severino Cellars, and Two Mountain Winery.

Classic Events Catering served a delicious “farm fresh” dinner of local foods featuring Baron of Beef and marinated local asparagus.

Toppenish High School senior Arturo Arellano, Jr., shared his perspective on the importance of the Buena Library as a supportive resource for young learners and families. Local attorney Brandon Monahan led Raise the Paddle – reiterating the challenges of providing services for the rural Buena community and the value of contributions. Donations were both generous and numerous!

After dinner entertainment included western dance lessons from Jim and Nan Ide. Additional sponsors and generous underwriters of the event were: Burkhart Dental Supply, Conover Insurance, Inc., Gibbons Pharmacy, Huibregtse, Louman Associates, Inc., Lemaster Daniels, CPA, Toppenish Community Hospital, and the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic.

The “Friends” & supporters had their first annual Barn Dance in February 2007. The Barn Dinner & Dance is an annual fundraiser held to raise funds to operate the new library/community center once it is built.

The first Barn Dance was a huge success! Over 100 guests had a great time while raising over $10,000.
